Trim Video (lossless)

Trim Video (lossless) is a free online tool that cuts a part of a video without re-encoding it: remove the boring start, the end of a recording, or keep just the moment that matters. The picture and the sound of the new file are exactly the same as the original, with no quality loss at all, and the cut takes seconds, even for long videos.

Your video is never uploaded anywhere: everything happens inside your own browser. It works with the videos of phones, cameras, screen recorders and the internet: MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV.

What does "lossless" mean?

Most video editors and online tools decode every frame of the video and compress it again when you cut it. That always loses some quality, takes a long time, and often makes the file bigger or smaller than it should be. This tool doesn't touch the picture or the sound: the compressed video and audio data of the part you chose is copied as it is into the new file. The result looks and sounds exactly like the original, frame by frame, and it's ready in a few seconds, even for a video that is hours long.

Why does the video start a little before my start point?

To save space, a video only stores some of its frames as complete pictures: the keyframes. The frames in between are stored as the differences from the previous ones, so they can't be shown without the keyframe they depend on. That's why a video can only be cut without re-encoding at a keyframe.

When your start point falls between two keyframes, the trimmed video starts at the keyframe just before it, so nothing you selected is lost. Phones and cameras usually record a keyframe every second or two, so the difference is small. The timeline under the slider shows where the keyframes are, and the "Previous keyframe" and "Next keyframe" buttons move the start point between them.

The end point has no such limitation: the trimmed video ends at the frame you chose. In videos that use B-frames, it may end up to a couple of frames later, at the first point where the cut doesn't skip any frame.

Which videos can I trim?

Videos in MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV, encoded with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), VP8, VP9, AV1 or ProRes, which covers videos from phones, cameras, screen recorders and most of the internet. The trimmed video keeps the format of the original whenever possible: an MP4 stays an MP4, a MOV stays a MOV, and so on. The rotation of phone videos, every audio track and the basic metadata, like the recording date, are kept too.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. This tool has no server side at all. Your video is read, trimmed and saved by your own browser, and it never leaves your computer.
